MESA (Music Education Southern Africa)
This two-year project has aimed at contributing to the development of the musical infrastructure of Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, by training potential local music teachers - not only aspire to work with the local MCI centers, but also to apply for local public and private institutions.
Candidates from any region within these countries have applied for the training courses, which took place in the cities of Lilongwe, Lusaka, Maputo, Dar es Salaam and Harare.
Five international trainers and professional musicians – one for each country - with experience in both music education and international cooperation have been responsible for the training courses. In August 2010, they have carried out an extensive field study in each country to understand the current needs in music education, as well as the local cultural traditions and the existing methodologies and curriculums.
Having developed a common teacher training methodology between the five countries - taking into account specific country needs and cultural differences - the teacher trainers began the courses in 2011.
This project has been financed by BCN Solidària - a Barcelona City Counsil program, as well as Music Crossroads Internacional, and the local MC partners in each of the five countries.
