MESA is the abbreviation of a new project: "Music Education in Southern Africa", primarily funded by Barcelona Solidaria.

During 2010-11, this project intends to A) make a research/mapping (Aug 2010) of music education - existing institutions, used methodologies etc - in the 5 present Music Crossroads countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia & Zimbabwe.

Collating the data from each country, B) a general educational plan will be developed by European and African experts including methodologies, progression and content and standardized for the 5 countries yet with flexibility for local specificities, to serve the Music Crossroads Centers but also other institutions.

In July-August 2011, C) a 3-weeks music teacher's training, based on the education plan, will be carried out in all 5 countries; in addition, it will also develop curriculums for each MC Center. Awareness Advocacy Activities towards governments, existing institutions and educational initiatives intends to build a stronger base for and synergize music education in the 5 countries.

The process of the MESA project is guided by an International Steering Committee with members from Norway, Germany, Scotland, Ireland and Spain. The Committee had its first meeting in Barcelona 21-22 January where process and activities for the first year were outlined - and the members had the opportunity to meet with Local Partner Organizations in Barcelona and Catalonia that will assist in the exposure of Music Crossroads and the MESA project on local level - among them EMIPAC (Private Music School's Association), JM Spain and Taller de Musics.
