Winner of Music Crossroads International Festival
Music Crossroads : Member
Konkalazi began their musical journey together in 2008 at the Music Crossroads Center in area 24 Lilongwe, Malawi. Each of the five band members comes from a different part of the country and brings with them a unique social and musical perspective into the mix. Konkalazi weaves soul, reggae, funk, RnB and jazz into a truly eclectic local brew that they call "AFRO-FUNK-INFUSION". Known for their catchy lyrics and funky instrumentals, the band is able to get just about anyone up on their feet and singing along in Chichewa the whole night long!
Having been connected to Music Crossroads for several years, Konkalazi finally won the Music Crossroads Malawi National Finals in 2012, going on to compete in the Music Crossroads International Festival in Maputo, Mozambique where again they placed first, taking back the title for Malawi.
These progressive young musicians write and perform songs which cleverly incorporate positive messages discussing HIV/AIDS, spirituality, relationships and other social issues faced by young Malawians.
Konkalazi's inspiration and goal is to excel throughout the world spreading different messages, like raising awareness about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, and about love; exchanging Malawian culture with other cultures through music.
Konkalazi members are drummer and band leader Edson Msendera, lead guitarist Kingsley Tembenu, bass player Rosha Vole, keyboardist Kumbukani Zamayele and lead vocalist Danny (Sirius) Kalima.
They say that even when the African sun is at its brightest, these rising stars can still be seen shining in the Malawi sky!
