Who are we?
The world of tomorrow belongs to the young people of today. They are the agents of change, and music is one of their most powerful and dedicated means of expression. Music Crossroads International (MCI) is a unique youth empowerment through music program, providing young people aged between 15 and 25 in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia, with musical opportunities and exposure, in addition to training in music and life skills.
The program has grown to reach over 75.000 musicians and a combined audience of over 100.000 people per year spread across the five countries. This has been achieved through over 40 annual festivals, performance training and international band tours, as well as workshops focused on music rights awareness, social interaction, gender issues and HIV/AIDS prevention, organized by the national Training Centers.
The Music Crossroads program was initiated in 1995 by Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI), the world's largest youth-music network. In 2008, Music Crossroads International, a non-governmental, non-profit association, changed its base to the multicultural city of Barcelona (Catalonia), Spain. Here it coordinates the Music Crossroads strategy - in cooperation with the local Music Crossroads partners in the five countries, locally owned and with flexibility to incorporate specific needs - with unified objectives and shared values. In addition, MCI is currently assessing the potential introduction of the program in New Countries.
Thanks to the generous support of local and international donors and partners, Music Crossroads is able to help promote the traditional, contemporary and urban music of young artists, with the aim of creating sustainable musical structures, improving self-awareness and social inclusion of young African individuals.
Music Crossroads has become one of the most exciting cultural development initiatives of the past decades; one of Africa's biggest cultural programs - and the continent's largest youth empowerment initiative!
