Music Crossroads : Participant
Bongo Love, originally from Bulawayo and now established in the capital Harare, have been playing together since 2001. They call their style “Afrocoustic Vibes”, a fusion of traditional African acoustic instruments, the mbira (thumb piano from Zimbabwe), the marimba (Mozambique) the djembe/bongo (West Africa) and the congas, but ignoring the traditional presentations and sound patterns and create a new style, fresh and modern appealing to young and old.
They have started riding their wave of success and their story is still unfinished. Mostly playing in Harare, in March 2006 they won the national prize of the Music Crossroads Festival in Zimbabwe and were selected to participate in the Interregional Festival of Music Crossroads that took place in Maputo, Mozambique in April. In this festival, competing with groups from Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, they won the Ethno Music Prize, which embarked them in 2006 to their first trip to Europe to the Ethno Music Camp in Sweden. The same year they performed with great success in the Spanish Cultural Center in Equatorial Guinea, in the ACP Festival in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and in the US.
