Zemkala Band is a traditional music band based in Dar es Salaam, comprises of 8-young talented members. The band that was created in 2002, comprises of 2 females and 6 males. Using a variety of traditional and modern instruments, which includes various drums, marimba, shakers, drum sets, leading guitars, bass guitars and a saxophone, Zemkala has been a very successful group in creating a style that suits different audiences.
Their popularity is centered in the group's explosive stage performances whereby their energetic instrumentation and dancing keep audience standing during most of the shows.
Zemkala's identification style is Ngwashala, a word that comes from a Mwera dialect of Southern Tanzania, describing a style of traditional dance called Ngwasala. During this dance pieces of wood usually used for pounding grains can be aligned on the floor and hit by thin tamarind sticks to create a rhythm accompanied by singing.
